Hi, I’m Chloe, and in this article I’ll be talking about why you should keep your house clean, ways to make it fun, and chores you can do to make your household as organized and clean as possible.
So, why should you keep your house clean? There are many reasons, but what I think are the most important ones are listed below:
To be organized: When you’re organized, it’s much easier to find your stuff when you want it. It also makes me (and other people!) feel more relaxed and comfortable to be in an organized environment.
To get rid of things: I used to have a lot of stuff, and it can make so much more work for me, so cleaning can be the chance for you to throw things away, sell them, donate, or gift things!
To stay healthy: This is both for mental AND physical health! As I mentioned earlier, having a clean, organized space can help prevent stress and uneasiness, but also, cleaning can help your physical health. Broken things that can cut you, you can clear out anything that attracts insects you don’t want, like spiders or flies, and you can make sure nothing is infected!
To present yourself well to others: Whether it’s visitors or people seeing you on Zoom, you want people to focus on YOU, not your messy background! You also run the risk of people having a lower opinion of you if you have such a messy space (if that matters to you).
So, now that we’ve talked a little about why you SHOULD clean, let’s move on to removing barriers to entry. Removing barriers to entry means addressing the reasons why you DON’T clean. Some of the most common examples are:
“I don’t have time!” - Instead, if you use a calendar, you can reserve a time to do it, so (if you follow a calendar precisely) you can’t back out.

“It takes too much energy to clean.” - instead, you can just do some cleaning 5 or 10 minutes at a time per day so you avoid having a GIANT mess at, say, the end of the month.
“I don’t feel like it and I’d rather do something else more fun!” - Which brings us to the next point…
Ta-da! Now we’re on gamification, or making something into a game. In this case, chores/cleaning. Here are some ways I gamify my chores:
Apps: As you can see if you look up “chore app”, there are plenty of ways to gamify with apps. I’ve tried a few of them, and they are awesome!!!
Audiobooks: Audiobooks can also be helpful, as a way to take your mind off the boring, sometimes monotonous things your body is doing. Look more closely at the picture above:

You can see my iPad, which is reading out on an audiobook! I use my audiobook a lot, although for other people it can be counterproductive, focusing them on it, and making them stop cleaning.
Talking with friends or family or playing games like 20 Questions: Talking to people is also a great way to take your mind off the chores! Plus, if you like to play word games, it can be especially fun!
Setting goals and rewards: Goals can help motivate people, and rewards can make you keep wanting to do it!
Keeping your brain occupied by a problem: Again, another way to “unfocus” your brain from the chores! I suggest you pick an actual problem for double productivity, not just some random math equation, although that can work too!
Now that we’ve talked about why you should clean, how to undo the reasons why not, and how to make chores more fun, let’s move on to chores you can do. There are thousands of options, but here are some of the most common ones:
Doing, folding, and putting away laundry.
Helping to prepare meals.
Loading and unloading the dishwasher.
Mowing the lawn.
Making their own lunch
Sweeping.
Taking out the garbage and recycling.
In conclusion, you want to be organized to get rid of things, stay healthy, and present yourself well to others. And if you don’t know where to start, doing laundry, washing dishes, and cooking meals are an excellent way to keep your house clean! One last thing…it’s important to make sure as many people as possible are being clean as well! Please share this knowledge/article so your friends and family can be healthy and tidy, too!
Thank you for reading this article, and I hope that you and your friends/family will have very clean, healthy lives from now on!
